Active duty members of Alaska’s National Guard, U.S. Army Reserves, U.S. Air Force Reserves, U.S. Navy Reserves, U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, and U.S. Coast Guard Reserves who are residents of Alaska receive a yearly complimentary hunting and fishing license. Nonresident active duty military can receive licenses at a discounted rate. (Residency is determined when a member lives in Alaska for 12+ months, has plans to remain in the state indefinitely and does not claim benefits or residency in another state.) Seward to Fairbanks
Stretching from Seward to Fairbanks, the Alaska Railroad is a beautiful way to travel across the Last Frontier. As an active or retired military member, you’ll receive 20% off retail published fares on the Alaska Railroad. Try any of the gorgeous scenic routes including the Coastal Classic from Anchorage to Seward or a lovely day trip on the Glacier Discovery route departing from Anchorage. Veterans who are disabled can obtain on Disabled veterans can get one Alaska State Park Camping Pass for no cost at all. Once the camping pass is obtained, it is good for all developed Alaska State Park campgrounds for the next two years. Free Tuition for Surviving Spouse or Dependent
One benefit that military personnel should be aware of is that the surviving spouse or dependent of any person of the military who became deceased in the line of duty will be given free undergraduate tuition at the University of Alaska. This same benefit is also offered to military listed by the DOD as a POW as well.
Traveling on the Alaska based airline? Save on expensive baggage fees. Active military members and their dependents have fees for their first five bags (up to 70 lbs. each) waived. (Additional bags are $75 each.) Military members also receive priority boarding. In addition, your four-legged family members also can enjoy a discount! Active military members can ship their pets on a flight for only $150 + tax. Pet flights can often incur charges of hundreds of dollars, depending on the flight. Typical costs are between $250-$350.
Veterans Land Discount/Purchase Preference
Interested in purchasing land? Before unoccupied residential land is offered to the general public via auction, veterans have the opportunity to buy that land based on appraised market value.
There is a program known as the Veterans Land Discount that offers a 25% reduction in the purchase price of residential and/or recreational plots of land as long as the veteran meets the qualifications. (Keep in mind that this discount can only be used one time during their life.)
